Release: Preview 5 - All Along the Watchtower
Wizard School Dropout » Devlog
Save Compatibility: I don't think using a save from Preview 4 with this version will cause crashes or errors, but tower management and some faction changes will be unavailable until you start a new game, and the way debt rates are stored has changed so your debt/penalty rates will be extremely low (though whether that's a problem...)
Tower Management:
- The headline feature for this update: You can now clean up and repair your tower, and build rooms in it that grant various bonuses or enable new actions. There are many different rooms, but a few ones I want to highlight that bring some new features to the game are:
- A training room, which actually lets you upgrade your physical stats for the first time!
- A kitchen, which lets you cook several new food recipes which have dynamic effects based on the ingredients used to make them. Most food recipes don't need to be discovered in recipe books, but are immediately available when you have a kitchen.
- Rooms available and tower management will continue to be developed. Notably, the plan is for a future update to let you permanently recruit residents to live at your tower.
- While adding rooms to the tower has been part of the plan for the game since the beginning, the game has been functioning without it and was developed and balanced with it not existing yet. I'm curious to know your thoughts, and any comments or suggestions you have for it, especially with regards to balance. If you have any, please feel free to post in the forums here or on Discord!
Time/Debt:
- Days are now grouped into 3-day weeks.
- Debt interest only increases at the end of the week, and minimum debt payments are due at the end of the week instead of daily.
- To account for this, default debt, interest values, and minimum payments have been increased.
- The default minimum payment now actually keeps up with interest - if you make minimum payments, you'll eventually pay off your debt.
- Backend change: the way debt is stored and calculated has changed because lua has weird accuracy issues with small decimal numbers. This shouldn't impact anything (aside from debt calculations being more accurate) but if you notice any weird issues with debt let me know.
Factions:
- The wizard faction now lets you recruit apprentices.
- Factions that offer recruitable creatures now have them on a separate tab.
- As of now, all recruitment is temporary; they'll accompany you on one adventure, then leave. As mentioned above, recruiting permanent residents and followers is planned for a future update.
- Introduced a new faction that starts contacted, the International Union of Hirelings, Sidekicks, Lackeys, and Henchpeople, which offers hiring construction workers to help build/repair your tower, and bodyguards.
- Killing vampire wizards and noble wizards no longer reduces reputation with the wizard faction.
- Killing vampire aristocrats in a mansion only decreases reputation with the nobility, not vampires. Killing them anywhere else only decreases reputation with vampires, not nobility.
- Favor exchanged for money no longer counts towards increasing reputation with a faction.
Gameplay:
- Most potions and drugs with turn-duration effects have had their duration increased.
- Creatures who are trying to move to a point they can't reach will now move to an adjacent point if they can, rather than cancelling the attempt entirely.
- Added a new Cursed Perk.
- Quick swim is now a level 1 spell.
- Recipe books and recipe items you encounter should now show undiscovered recipes before containing any recipes you already know.
- Damage resistance and armor can no longer reduce damage to 0, instead to a minimum of 1. (Though creatures immune to a given damage type do take 0 damage)
- Epicurean nobles now no longer follow you after you smoke with them.
UI:
- The Deepen Arcana Knowledge screen shows all arcana you can potentially increase and their costs, even if you don't have enough secrets to do it.
- Multiple stacks of the same item (eg weapons) are now combined into one line on store and faction sell screens.
Bug Fixes:
- Temporary enchantments on items were permanently removing the enchantment slot.
- Fixed a Monsterpedia bug that was causing it to error and close on certain creatures.
- Poison cloud spell damage value is now actually applied to the poison cloud created.
- Creatures guarding a point they can't move to will now wander around that point rather than getting stuck next to it.
- Fixed a bug in damage resistance code that might have been causing it to apply improperly.
- The multi-target upgrade for icicles now works properly.
- Enthralling a creature who was next to you could sometimes lead to them still attacking you.
- Caged prisoners don't start trying to follow you until there's actually a way for them to get out of the cage, which prevents them from teleporting up the stairs if you leave even if the cage is still closed.
- When switching to windowed mode from fullscreen, the window returns to the default size.
- This fixes a bug in Windows where the window was instead becoming a window at the max screen resolution, which placed the title bar offscreen and effectively meant the game was permanently stuck in fullscreen.
